Pipestone Quarry LLC has acquired the Pipestone Quarry, 20 miles east of Butte, Mont. Owner Dennis Washington recently finalized the purchase. The quarry, about 64 acres, produces rock for railroad ballast.
Washington has extensive mining, rail, marine and industrial interests, including Montana Resources, which operates a Butte open pit mine, and Montana Rail Link.
Tim McHugh, vice president of finance and administration for Montana Resources, told local media that Montana Resources and Pipestone Quarry LLC, are two separate companies.
McHugh added that if Montana Resources needs any rock, it would buy the rock from Pipestone Quarry LLC. McHugh added that the previous owner of the quarry, URS Energy and Construction, previously employed 14 workers. Their jobs will not change and no additions to the quarry’s workforce is expected.
